Surrey Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) are holding their annual conference on Thursday 29 November 2018 at H.G. Wells Woking Conference & Events Centre, Church Street East, Woking, Surrey, GU21 6HJ.

SSCB Conference 2018 Outline Final


The conference will focus on early intervention and responding to children experiencing neglect, with a range of presentations from both local and national practitioners and young people who have received services. The conference will be opened by Claire Burgess (SSCB Chair) followed by Dave Hill (Executive Director Children, Family & Learning SurreyCC) and will include an update on Early Help in Surrey and work being undertaken to reduce the impact of neglect on children and young people.

 

PLEASE BE AWARE: The Surrey Safeguarding Children Board plan to film this event for training purposes, this will be mainly focused on the presentations however there will be occasional shots of the audience participation. If you do not want to be filmed please could you let us know prior to the event so that we can manage this.

 

Speakers:


Dez Holmes, Director of Research in Practice, champions evidence-informed practice across the children’s and adults social care sector in order to improve outcomes for children, young people, and adults. She will present a paper on strengths and evidence-based practice focusing on neglect and early help, sharing examples of good practice as well as long term strategies to improve outcomes for children and families.


Donna Malloy, Director of Policy and Practice at the Early Intervention Foundation, has developed policy on family intervention and its expansion in the Troubled Families Team and led work in DfE to develop policy on families at risk, Think Family and oversaw national programmes to increase the availability of evidence based parenting programmes. She will share evidence supporting early intervention in tackling the root causes of social problems for children and young people, outline programmes that have shown to improve outcomes for children and discuss ways of tackling the inter-generational cycle of disadvantage and supporting the next generation to raise strong families.


Chris Hickford, (CEO) from the Eikon Charity, a Surrey based charity providing long-term support to some of the county’s most vulnerable young people, will deliver a presentation with young people about their experiences and support they have received.
Kerry Littleford will deliver a personal testimony on the impact of Neglect on children, she will speak about her experience as a child growing up with adversity, experiencing significant neglect.


Danya Glaser, a visiting professor at UCL and honorary consultant child & adolescent psychiatrist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, is currently working on the early recognition of fabricated or induced illness and will talk about her work to enable professionals to recognise and respond in a timely manner to this complex area of abuse.


Young people, who have received services from the Rights and Participation (RAP) Team, will deliver a presentation outlining difficulties they have faced and support that has made a difference to them.

By Train or Bus

  • Leave the train station on the town side (Platform 1) cross over the road and head down Chertsey Road with McDonalds on your right.
  • Turn left towards the Martian statue, Ladbrokes is on the corner. At the Martian statue, turn right into Church Street East.
  • HG Wells is approximately 100m on your right, just before the pedestrian bridge which crosses the road. For train times please call 08457 48 49 50.

From M25

  • Exit Junction 11 towards Woking. Travel along the dual carriageway at the roundabout take the first exit onto the A320.
  • At the roundabout (The Miller & Carter restaurant on your left) take the second exit Guildford Road.
  • At the roundabout (McLarens) take the second exit Chertsey Road.
  • At the roundabout (The Six Crossroads) take the third exit to Woking on Chertsey Road until you reach a roundabout on the outskirts of the town. (Pet Doctors, Veterinary Practice is on the left).
  • Go straight over this roundabout signposted to Guildford.
  • Approximately 200m take the slip road to the Holiday Inn and the entrance to the Victoria Way multi-storey Car Park.
  • Park in the Victoria Way Car Park on the fourth level and use the pedestrian link bridge to HG Wells Reception.

From A3/ Guildford

  • Exit the A3 at Guildford following the A320 signposted to Woking.
  • Continue on the A320 for approximately 4 miles, until you go under the Victoria Arch Bridge and pass Toys R Us on your right and along the one-way system through Woking.
  • Continue until you reach a roundabout. (You will see Pet Doctors, Veterinary Practice just off the right). Go all the way round the roundabout and back on yourself.
  • Approximately 200m take the slip road to the Holiday Inn and the entrance to the Victoria Way Car Park.  Park in the Victoria Way Car Park on the fourth level and use the pedestrian link bridge to HG Wells Reception.
