Please note: There are two different versions of this course, one being generic and one having a focus on Autism. Please can you ensure that you choose the most appropriate session (Generic or Autism Focused) as much of the materials and principles are similar and you will not be a good use of time to attend both. Pre-requisite: Participants must have completed
- ‘Working Together to Safeguarding Children’ Induction Training or have completed an approved alternative course.
Target Group: The course is aimed at practitioners and managers in voluntary, independent and statutory agencies who work with children and young people, including those with disabilities, and/or their parents/carers in either inclusive settings or specialist provision.
Course Aim: To increase awareness of the particular vulnerabilities of disabled children and to provide participants with an opportunity to explore ways in which we can effectively safeguard disabled children from harm.
By the end of the course participants will have:
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance and research and their application in effectively safeguarding and meeting the needs of disabled children as well as review the messages from relevant Serious Case Reviews.
- Understand the importance of the social model of disability in relation to
- Explore the concept of “created vulnerability” and describe the particular circumstances which make disabled children and young people vulnerable to abuse.
- Consider the potential confusion of signs and indicators of abuse in disabled children
- Explain the factors which may influence the threshold for intervention for disabled.
- Ensure that interventions remain focused on the best interests of the child whilst working in complex situations where there are many competing demands and priorities.
- Identify factors that promote self-esteem and resilience.

Please note: individuals must create their own account. There is no facility for one person to create an account in their name and book places for numerous numbers of staff. If you are booking on behalf of another member of staff you need to register in their name rather than your own.

Enter via Prince’s Avenue and follow signs.
Parking is scattered so park anywhere nearby. There is no need to sign in at the reception.
Please note that the room and location of the room at the site will be confirmed 5 days prior to the training with an email and attached joining instructions.
Coffees and teas will be provided at 11.00am and 2.45pm.
Please bring lunch as this will not be provided. There is a small cafe in the sports centre which is 300 meters away from the training room or you are a short drive away from Godalming.

Follow the signs for the M25 southbound (Signposted: M3, M23, M20, Southampton, Gatwick, Dartford) and continue on the M25 until you reach Junction 10, then follow directions for the A3 southbound to Guildford.
Follow the signs for the M23 northbound (Signposted: London, M25, Dartford, Heathrow) joining the motorway at Junction 9. Take the left hand lane at Junction 8 and join the M25 westbound (Signposted: A3, London (SW), Guildford). Continue on the M25 until you reach Junction 10, then follow directions for the A3 southbound to Guildford.

Take the A3 south (Signposted: Portsmouth, Guildford). Follow the A3 past Guildford to Godalming and take the exit marked Compton, Charterhouse, Puttenham. At the roundabout, take the second exit, marked Farnham, Puttenham, Charterhouse and at the next roundabout turn left into Priorsfield Road. Follow the road for approximately 1 mile until you reach Charterhouse on the right-hand side.
From A3 Northbound:
Take the A3 north (Signposted: London, Guildford). Take the exit marked Puttenham, Compton, Charterhouse and on reaching the roundabout turn right. This will take you over the A3 and take the second exit at the next roundabout marked Hurtmore, Charterhouse into Priorsfield Road. Follow the road for approximately 1 mile until you reach Charterhouse on the right-hand side.
From the A31 Winchester/Farnham
Follow the A31 and take the exit marked Wanborough, Norney, Puttenham, Godalming. Follow the road until you reach a roundabout. Take the second exit and cross over the A3, taking the second exit at the next roundabout marked Hurtmore, Charterhouse and enter Priorsfield Road. Follow the road for approximately 1 mile until you reach Charterhouse on the right-hand side.
Godalming station is on the London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour line. There are taxis available outside the station.
